"Time for This Big Dog to Bite Back": Is Frank Rich Delusional?

In an op-ed entitled "Time for This Big Dog to Bite Back" (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/12/opinion/12rich.html?pagewanted=all) in today's New York Times, Frank Rich writes:

"Obama’s approval rating, for months a consistent (not imploding) 45-ish percent, still makes him arguably America’s most popular national politician.

. . . .

Obama must also call out the powerful interests who are pulling the G.O.P.’s strings (and filling its coffers), whether on Wall Street or in Big Oil or any other sector where special interests are aligned against reform in the public interest."

Peculiar. When I examine Obama's approval ratings in recent months, I don't see a stable horizontal line (http://www.gallup.com/poll/113980/gallup-daily-obama-job-approval.aspx). Rather I see the makings of a brain dead flatline, trending south.

No one is more popular than Obama? Hillary's popularity exceeds that of Obama by double digits (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/14/AR2010061404756.html).

"Obama must also call out the powerful interests who are pulling the G.O.P.’s strings (and filling its coffers)"? Really? And what about BP's contributions to Obama? And those of Soros?

According to Rich, Obama is a "big dog", which leaves me to wonder what exactly Frank is smoking. He is mistaking Obama, a feathered animal combining the attributes of a turkey (flightless), goose (feckless) and chicken (fainthearted), with a canine.

This time it's Pancake's turn to be offended.

  1. I think, turkey, goose and chicken well serve their purpose and deserve our full respect. The comparison is too flattering for Obama.
About "big dog" comparison I am not sure. It depends on what kind of dog and whose dog are they talking about. Dogs can be very dangerous.

  2. Wall Street bought the Senate for Democrats during Schumer's tenure heading the DSCC, and the New York Times even gave Schumer the title "Senator For Wall Street" when the Business section published their series on "The Reckoning".

It is not the case of who is filling whose coffers, but that the Democrats are now begging for every dollar.

Too inconvenient for Frank Rich to factor in the 79% percentage of Americans who think America is heading the wrong direction, being led by the wrong lead dog, who may still be 'likeable enough' for 45%.

And to an invitation to take delivery of the Times, I have written back:
"The Times's lack of editorial vigilance has resulted in a cascade of implied and stated antisemitic sentiment that has been permitted to infect its pages. As such, it would be a dereliction of decency for me to subscribe."
